Nanakita Park is a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike in Sendai city, Japan. It’s also the birthplace of legendary figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, whose legacy has inspired countless fans worldwide. Among the park’s many attractions, visitors can find a cherished memorial tree known as the “Yuzu Sakura“, a symbol of Hanyu’s enduring impact on the sport of figure skating and beyond.

What is Yuzu-Zakura?

Many people around the world are familiar with Yuzuru Hanyu’s incredible achievements in figure skating, including his World Championships title in Men’s Singles, four consecutive victories in the Grand Prix Final in Men’s Singles, and most notably, his back-to-back Olympic gold medals in Men’s Singles. He is truly a one-of-a-kind hero from Sendai.

The memorial tree located in this park was planted to honor his consecutive Olympic victories, and was donated by a labor union in the prefecture.

Previously, the Yuzu Zakura tree was planted on the other side of the Izumigaike pond in the park, but due to poor growth caused by being shaded by trees on the embankment from early daytime, it was moved last year to a more sunny and prominent location. The Yuzu Cherry Blossom in 2023 has a unique touch thanks to the Ice Garden Project

The Yuzu Sakura, which regained its strength after transplantation, is attracting attention this spring as a flower tree display inspired by Yuzuru Hanyu’s magnificent performance in the “Ice Garden Project”.

His jumps are like defying gravity with their height and rotation, and the beauty of the landing, as if beautiful and soft snowflakes are falling. His technical skills such as steps and spins have always been captivated with his unique style that is delicate yet powerful.

His strong and delicate beauty is expressed by the dynamism and delicacy of this cherry blossom, and the entire nemophila field serves as a sparkling ice rink.

It seems that more fans have come to see this cherry blossom since it was transplanted, and it feels even more lively this year. People are staring at it with a dreamy look, taking pictures with all their might, projecting their love for Yuzuru Hanyu in different ways.

“Park Day will be held on April 8th and 9th, 2023.”

This weekend is IZUMI PARK DAY, and events will be held at Nanakita Park following last week. This is the account of the Nanakita Park Revitalization Council.

This weekend, there will be a hot air balloon experience event in addition to the IZUMI PARK DAY held at Nanakita Park, which was not available last weekend. The event is organized by the Nanakita Park Activation Council.

The official website for the event is https://sendaitrip.com/.

I took this photo from the hot air balloon ride with an Insta360 X2 camera during the beautiful autumn foliage season last year.

Park Day is held several times a year from warm spring to autumn.

On the day of the event, from around 10:30 to 15:00, there are many food trucks and stalls like a festival, making it lively.

Nanakita Park is also a great place for child-rearing, with very well-equipped playground equipment. Access is also excellent, as it is very close to Izumi-Chuo Station. During the cherry blossom season in spring and on weekends with good picnic weather, the parking lot may become full and require lining up from around 11 a.m., but it is not so crowded on cloudy days or weekdays.

There is also a restaurant called KASVI CAFE inside the park where you can enjoy light meals, coffee, and some miscellaneous goods for sale. It is closed on Mondays.

This park is also recommended as a casual park where you can have lunch. Even if you are not a fan of Mr. Hanyu, please stop by and check it out.
